In 1959, seven civilian workers at the Norfolk Naval Air Station invested $5 each and chartered a federal credit union. Today, Chartway has grown to become one of the largest credit unions in the country, a cooperative association where every person is an owner and profits are returned to its members.
At a time when local banks were merging into larger systems, Meridian's work for Chartway touted the benefits of the credit union's size and service to local shareholders.
