NORFOLK, Va. -- Norfolk International Airport (NIA) has been recognized
by Airports Council International-North America (ACI-NA) with its
2002 Peggy G. Hereford Award for Excellence, widely recognized throughout
the airport world as the highest honor an airport can earn in the
communications field. The official presentation took place on Thursday,
Nov. 14 at the ACI-NA 11th Annual Conference & Exhibition in
Salt Lake City, Utah.
The Hereford award is given in honor of creativity in illustrating
the airport's message, effectiveness in connecting with audiences,
and the overall scope of the airport's effort in marketing and public
relations. Its goal is to spotlight the commitment and dedication
of the winning airport's accomplishments in marketing and communications.
In addition to winning the Hereford award, NIA took first place
honors in three categories for its recent "Make Your Connection"
campaign. They included print advertising (black and white), television
advertising, and Web sites. The "Make Your Connection"
campaign was created and produced by The Meridian Group-Marketing
Communications in Virginia Beach, Va.
"It was especially noted that the airport staff was able
to take tough emotional issues and handle them with taste and
grace in their products," said Juliet Wright, senior director
of public affairs for ACI-NA. "The judges commended Norfolk
International for its Web site's easy navigation and the excellent
graphical elements of its television advertising. Overall, Norfolk
International highlighted family themes that had a consistent
softness without an edge."
Norfolk International was one of 64 airports that submitted entries
in the contest which encompasses categories that recognize work
in marketing and public relations, and gives airports the opportunities
to be honored for the quality of their work. Award categories
include brochures, advertising, marketing and public relations
campaigns, special events, newsletters and aviation education
and tour programs.
"We are honored to be the recipient of the 2002 Peggy G.
Hereford Award of Excellence," said Kenneth R. Scott, executive
director of the Norfolk Airport Authority. "This year has
been a challenge for all airports, and to be recognized by the
judges for our overall marketing and communications efforts is
most gratifying and a credit to our creative team."
ACI-NA represents local, regional and state governing bodies
that own and operate commercial airports in the United States
and Canada. ACI-NA member airports enplane more than 98 percent
of the domestic and virtually all the international airline passenger
and cargo traffic in North America. Over 300-related businesses
are also members of the association, which is the largest of the
six worldwide regions of ACI.
Norfolk International Airport, operated by the Norfolk Airport
Authority, offers approximately 200 arrivals and departures daily
to primary cities throughout the United States and the world.
Norfolk International presently ranks in the country's top 75
in terms of passengers served annually, with more than three million
projected for the year 2002. Airlines serving Norfolk International
include six major carriers - American, Continental, Delta, Northwest,
Southwest and US Airways - and five regional carriers - American
